High standards, strong motivation, effective discipline and an atmosphere of caring to foster excellence at Plato Academy, a public charter school with private-school advantages. While providing a stimulating and demanding education, Plato Academy gives students a high level of individualized attention. Every student is special at this small school with an average of fewer than 18 students per class and a small student-to-teacher ratio.

Enrollment: Plato Academy is open to all eligible students in Pinellas and surrounding counties. However, school personnel believe that students who are bright, creative and have the potential to develop into critical thinkers will benefit most from the Academy's programs and have the best educational experience. Plato Academy follows the principle of effective learning: the learner's ability to understand and interact with what is being presented. The school is designed for students with potential for creativity, emotional growth, and leadership. Advanced students have opportunities to learn at an accelerated pace.

School Focus: At Plato Academy, personnel believe appropriate student behavior will ensure uninterrupted teaching and encourage an atmosphere conducive to learning. The school offers an enriched disruption-free environment through optimum instruction, support and encouragement. The focus is on responsibility and strict discipline for students, accountability through testing, uniform and dress code compliance, and parent involvement.

Personnel strive to instill values and responsibilities at every step of the child's education. This is done by creating a positive and challenging learning environment based on a supportive and cooperative partnership involving students, staff members, parents, and the community. Plato Academy provides an environment in which students can learn and teachers can teach. The academic focus is on reading, math and Greek as a second language. All students also receive instruction in science, physical education, the humanities, music, drama, and art. The Socratic method of teaching is used, emphasizing discussion and dialogue to develop critical thinkers.

Homework:  Plato Academy recognizes the importance of homework to reinforce content already taught in the classroom, help students develop positive independent work/study habits, build self-discipline, instill a sense of responsibility, identify any areas of difficulty for students , and involve parents in the learning process.
